Both Bands contribute two songs to this wonderful split. Captain, your ship is sinking continue, where they stopped on their debut LP. Two long songs with great combination of slow, atmospheric parts followed by harder fast played parts, always with very catchy melodies. The Vocals swith between spoken and harsh screamed parts. On the split side mio contribute their best two songs so far. Different to their earlier releases these songs are much longer. This Duo(only guitar and drums) play some kind of 90s style. The records include a paper folded to a ship. This is also the booklet with lyrics and additional information.

mock are from berlin, germany and echo bands such as frodus, karate and joan of arc - in a pretty good way, too. we fade to grey are a bunch of sweet boys from munich, germany and rock pretty hard as well - can't go wrong with jangly guitars, slightly mathy rhythms and north of america influences.

Another split-7" from Germany. Now it's time for the post-punk/screamo duo Mio from Leipzig and the solo post-rock/atmospheric emo project Duct Hearts from Munich. So there are more labels than band members involved in this release, hehe. Anyhow, if you dig music that is played by hearts full of love and deep thoughts you should check this out. Especially the Duct Hearts song is sooo beautiful!

This split 7'' contains two bands who I have only recently found out about. Both are from Germany and the record has been released by five European labels. Nicely put together with lots of little inserts inside, the main one being a neat threaded mini booklet.
Mio are up first, they have a fairly long but upbeat intro and appear to be influenced mainly by contemporary European emo bands. It's pretty driven and has a good groove to it. I can't think right now who best to compare it to. If you like bands such as Mr. Willis Of Ohio you should be into this. Vocals finally make their way in and are shouted over the top. They are pretty brief though, with the song then returning to being instrumental after this, albeit with different riffs and some changes in tempo. It's good stuff, though personally I prefer more vocals. Maybe a song to go with other ones rather than fill a whole side on a 7''.
Duct Hearts are on the other side. They also have a fairly long introduction, which is far more twinkly than Mio's track. Vocals come in at a similar time but are now sung. It's quite beautiful. I rarely listen to music like this but I like it. The vocals continue from this point on, the song being about the feeling of being home and the lyrics are in English. A really nice song.
Overall, Germany continues to be pretty productive in the genre of emo. This is definitely worth checking out and I'll be keeping an eye on both band's future releases.

Eine Platte, an der mehr Labels beteiligt sind, als Lieder darauf enthalten sind, sowas solls ja auch geben. Wie in diesem Falle bei der Split der deutschen Bands Mio und Duct Hearts. Dies hat aber nichts über die Spieldauer auszusagen, denn beide Bands liefern jeweils einen ca. 5-6 min langen Song. Es lässt sich also schon erahnen, dass es hier eher ruhiger zur Sache geht.
Beide Songs könnten manchen von euch bereits irgendwie bekannt sein, angefangen bei Mio: Das Duo aus Leipzig veröffentlichte den Song "Möglichkeit" bereits auf dem Split-Tape mit Alia, da allerdings mit DIY - Punkrock Sound, wurde für diese Platte nun neu eingespielt. Euch erwartet ein langer Lo-Fi Post-Punk-Schrei-Emo Song, der mit ziemlich wenig Gesang/Text auskommt, was ich aber nicht schlimm finde. Dieser kurze und einfach gehaltene Text kommt so genau richtig bei mir an...fasziniert mich irgendwie. Musikalisch ist das Lied nicht besonders aufregend, man muss eben Gefallen an etwas trashigerer Musik haben (und das tue ich).
Das Lied "Schlafen" von Duct Hearts, was, glaube ich, bisher nur ein nach einem Drummer suchendes 1-Mann-Projekt aus München ist, war schon auf der Love.Life - Compilation von Builtonfriendship-Records vertreten, da allerdings in der "Instrumental Preview" Version. Hier jetzt sozusagen die Vollversion mit Vocals und so. Leute, ich fand die instrumental Version ja schon sehr schön, aber durch den Gesang und den wundervollen Text könnte ich nun meinen, in diesem Lied die Liebe meines Lebens gefunden zu haben...schade manchmal, dass man Lieder nicht heiraten kann...wie auch immer. Kennt ihr Wishes on a plane (ich glaube, das ist sogar derselbe Sänger/Gitarrist)? Die Musik hier geht jedenfalls in die gleiche Richtung...über 6 Minuten die euer Herz schmelzen lassen, ohne Scheiß. Ganz verträumter, atmosphärischer Emo-Postrock (gibts sowas?) mit einem glasklaren Gesang, der euch die Realität vergessen lässt. Bitte mehr davon, für mich auf jeden Fall das schönere Lied der 7inch.
Eigentlich ist das einzig Schlechte dieser EP, dass sie nach knapp 12 Minuten vorbei ist, darum freu ich mich schon auf weitere Veröffentlichungen vor allem von Duct Hearts.
Für Liebhaber von verträumter Post-Irgendwas Musik dringend zu empfehlen!

duct hearts is a chap from wishes on a plane, playing something very similar, a long, drawn out melancholy song in the mineral gone a bit post rock vein. mio play a melodic, downbeat, screamo brooder that bursts into harsh vocals part way through.

GSLG have come quite a way since the last time I heard them, which I believe was some dreadful demo track they had up on Myspace. Knowing my skills, that song is probably on this 7", and I was just in a bad mood at the time. Their music twinkles away delightfully on the first song with the bass playing an integral part in forming their sound, pushing things onwards. Things fall apart a little when they try and get more energetic, but overall this is really effective stuff that brings to mind Reiziger, with urgent spoken vocals and the familiar guitar sound. The second song is fairly disposable, it builds up and eventually they gang shout a bit. Nowhere near as effective as the first song to be honest.
Me and Goliath are a UK band that I know absolutely nothing about. They don't even post on Collective as far as I know. That's grounds for being kicked out of the scene right there! They are screamo with some emo elements, lots of desperate yelling and rumbling guitars. The first song reminds me of stuff like Her Breath on Glass perhaps. "Sick Boy" seems like the pick of the two songs for the most part. It comes across in places as a band still finding their feet, but they show enough to make it worth investigating if you are into this style.

Daniel, Anna, Paul und Tobias sind Wishes On A Plane aus München und haben Anfang 2008 die sowohl auf 10" Vinyl und Cdr erschienene Ep "This Faint Line" herausgebracht. "Anfang 2008 rausgebracht und jetzt noch ein Review?". Ja Leute ich weiß, aber erstens gab es uns da ja noch gar nicht und zweitens:"Was früher gut war muss heute nicht schlecht sein".
Jedes Phrasenschwein freut sich jetzt aber es passte hier einfach so schön, denn die Wishes On A Plane Platte ist für mich ein richtiges Goldstück. Daniel, der Typ von Time as a color, hat mich gefragt ob ich nicht vielleicht paar Zeilen über diese schreiben möchte. Als ich sie mir dann angehört hatte konnte ich auch einfach nicht widerstehen.
"This Faint Line" drückt mit seinen drei Songs Part I/II/III das aus, wofür Scrubs JD eine ganze Staffel braucht. Wenn man mich nun fragte was für Musik Wishes On A Plane auf dieser Platte denn machen, würde ich es warscheinlich so beantworten:"Also stell dir vor auf der einen Seite sind Trip Fontaines Instrumentalparts und auf der anderen Girolamos Walk. Irgendwie sind die befreundet, aber haben irgendwann einen fürchterlichen Krach und reden nur spärlich miteinander, obwohl jede Seite dem Anderen soviel zu sagen hätte. Beide wissen das sie die Probleme so einfach lösen könnten, wenn sie denn nur sich selbst überwinden könnten"
Einfach schön sowas zu hören. Kevin würde jetzt sagen:"Kann man machen." Ich sage:"Sollte man auf jeden Fall machen."

Dreary, sparse indie rock which verges on post rock doesn’t tend to be my tipple, as I am far too impatient when it comes to music. A part of my “if it’s not punk then it’s shit” youth which is still trapped inside me still likes to believe that anything over 2 minutes long is wank prog guff, but he’s adapted to more and more exceptions as I’ve gotten older. What a wimp. However, this record turned my head slightly, especially as it is nicely packaged in stamped, heavy weight construction paper and a couple of delicate inserts.. The progressive build ups didn’t get the better of my patience, or lack of. The whole article portrays itself as a constant crescendo; a pleasant build up which then leaves you on the edge of a cliff, feeling as despaired as what you’ve just heard. It has that kind of holding power that requires your full attention. It’s not the sort of record you can just stick on and do your housework to, or blast on your ipod whilst you’re down at the gym. Sitting down, with this record engorging through your headphones is what this record really necessitates, hearing each word build up, swell and collapse. It’s sparse, delicate and moody, which opts for loose repetitious tones over structure and direction. It plods along miserably, leaving a similar lasting impression. You could insist that this is the exact polar opposite of bands like What Price Wonderland, who tend to cram structures into short blasts. Wishes On A Plane spread everything thinly, one cut spanning the entire side of a the record. It’s brittle and fragile, reminiscent of The Sing/Cancel single by Karate, but less Carlos Santana, and more morose, sulky emo. So, switch the lights off, curl up on the floor and listen to the winter rain bash down on your windows along to this record and the thoughts in your head of that girl you like, or whatever your tedious problems are. You’ll feel better. Honest.

Nyilvánvalóan nem eredeti, és persze, hogy unalmas post-rock, böböböbö, irdatlanul leszarom, a Membrane és a Brainoil után ezt kell meghallgatni, s pihenni. Van két hosszú szám, meg némi vokál is, ami direkte kissé bizonytalanra van véve, s ez így van rendjén. Engem viccesmód mindig az Austerity Program vokáljára emlékeztet, ami meg kell hagyni nem épp fülbarát. Etto"l (még) simán fasza, én nagyon csípem. És rég is volt ilyesmi itt, mégha a világot nem is váltja meg, akkor is.

Seit rund sechs Jahren gibt es die Münchner WISHES ON A PLANE nun schon, und in den Anfangstagen waren sie ganz klar eine Emo-Band. Heute sind sie das irgendwie immer noch, doch sie sind sehr viel vielschichtiger geworden, spielen lange und streckenweise sehr langsame Songs, die sich im Laufe der Minuten mehr und mehr entfalten. Kein dauerhaftes Gitarrengeschrammel, sondern ein gekonntes Miteinander von Ruhe und Explosion. Der Emo der früheren Tage dringt nach wie vor durch, vor allem im spärlich eingesetzten Gesang, mal zerbrechlich, mal schreiend. Wunderbar ist die so entstehende Spannungskurve, die sich immer wieder aufbaut, den Zuhörer auf einen kleinen Kurztrip mitnimmt – und ihn am Ende ganz sanft wieder absetzt. Dass in „This Faint Line" eine Menge Herzblut steckt, wird nicht erst beim Hören ersichtlich – die liebevolle Verpackung dieses Tonträgers spricht für sich. Denn die Münchner haben ihre knapp 20 Minuten Musik auf Vinyl gepresst, noch dazu im angenehmen, aber unwirtschaftlichen 10"-Format. Eingepackt sind die handnummerierten Platten in eine gefaltete, blaue Hülle, die mit weißer Farbe bedruckt ist – offensichtlich per Siebdruck. Dazu Einleger mit Songtexten und anderen Informationen zur Band. Sehr schön.

Die paar Kilometer waren allmorgendlich mit dem Fahrrad zurück zu legen. Der Wind kam immer von vorn und beim Treten war es oftmals schwierig, die Ohrenstöpsel drin zu behalten. Wie einflussreich die Musik damals war, das brachte Stulle auf den Punkt. Er sagte, mit der „Beneath the Remains“ im Walkman, bräuchte er fünf Minuten weniger für den Weg. Eine gute Feststellung, die meisten waren sich einig und sofort wurde fleißig kopiert. Für’s Tempo eben. Mir fiel es schwer mitzuziehen, viel zu zuverlässig hatte mich die Bremer Band age jahrelang an mein Ziel gebracht. Hauke Hirsinger, der brüllte sich die Seele aus dem Leib, die Songs fingen an, sie schweiften ab, sie kamen nie wirklich zum Punkt und fanden auch kein Ende. Das war natürlich extrem zermürbend, aber damit auch extrem gut. Es war die Kombination aus Songstruktur und Aufnahme, die mich bewegte. Keine GEMACHTEN Songs, keine x Takes. Age, das war Echtzeit. Zwanzig Minuten Radfahren entsprachen genau zwanzig Minuten Studio Aufenthalt. Die Faszination der Band Wishes on a Plane ist ähnlich gelagert. Sie bieten uns ihre Minuten an, sind angespannt und bringen ihre Songs voran. Wir können das ganze Stück mitgehen, das ist doch herrlich! Zwar drängt sich streckenweise das Gefühl auf, hier einer Band zuzuhören, die unterhalb ihrer Maximalkapazität arbeitet. Die eigentlich noch krasser sein könnte. Aber der Entwurf zählt. Der neue Optimismus wird hier langsam zerrieben. Und zwar in Echtzeit!

I've known Wishes On A Plane since the time when they played amazing pop-songs. Over the years the line-up has changed, Gebi and Josef left the band and Tobi and Anna joined. What stayed was and is the amazing music, which is neither pop anymore. Wait... that's a lie, but describing Wishes On A Plane's music isn't easy, which you can take as a compliment. You could say the Red Sparrows have decided to make a melancholic record with Coney Noise. The most parts of the songs are instrumental and only a tiny part of the songs have singing, shouting and crying. I like this a lot, because the vocals supplement the music and give its melancholic sound a sense and it's good music and it's good lyrics that makes a song for me. Concerning the music there's to add that the guys have very fine melodies that aren't eye-catching the first time you listen to them, but have the quality to swell to something very special. And this is the kind of art one should like, isn't it?

ein stück musik, auf tiefschwarzes vinyl gepresst, in der hand zu halten hat schon etwas spirituelles. das eigene spiegelbild ist zwar dunkel wie ein schatten aber unverzerrt, klar und echt. digitale formate hingegen bringen einem, zumindest in physischer form, wenig entgegen. sie sind in ihrer mobililtät der zeit angepasst und unkompliziert. insofern haben wishes on a plane mit der enscheidung für eine waschechte 10" alles richtig gemacht. vinyl als einizig logisches format! man sieht ihr die liebe an, mit der sie gemacht ist. alles von hand gefaltet und beschriftet. jedes "this faint line" selbst auf die platten gestempelt. dreht sich die scheibe auf dem plattenspieler wird einem klar wo die liebe zum detail und für die bastelei herkommt. die arrangements der songs sind alles andere als schnell, zusammengezimmert oder stereotyp, fernab von hektik. jeder part bekommt die zeit die er braucht um seine atmosphäre zu entfalten. die töne genießen den luxus von raum, der sie beherbergt. der gesang bleibt lediglich ein privileg für wenige sekunden. bis dieser einsetzt ist "this faint line" im prog-rock verwurzelt. im proberaum produziert, steht jedes instrument für sich, nimmt eine eigene perspektive ein, von welcher aus sie jedem part ihren eigenen charakter einflößt. die drums ebnen aus dem hintergrund den weg für die cleanen gitarren oder zeigen dem hörer diesen, wenn das instrumentarium in fast undurchsichtige flächen ausbricht. der bass ist im raum allgegenwärtig, füllt seine rolle mal spielerisch, mal melodiös tragend aus. eben nicht ganz einfach. nicht ganz unkompliziert. eben auf vinyl gehörend. setzt, wenn auch selten, der gesang ein, um der form den passenden inhalt zu geben, trennt sich die hörer-spreu vom weizen. spätestens dann muss man liebhaber sein. muss man freund des emos sein, der noch ernst zu nehmen war. hot water music oder the get up kids sollten im plattenregal eine rolle spielen. wenn dann auch noch platz für explosions in the sky und ein wenig seidenmatt (um die elektronik reduziert) ist, ist wishes on a plane dort in guter gesellschaft.

this one came out of the blue, but daniel from the band and time as a color asked if i'd be interested in helping his band put out a release, and i jumped at the chance. wishes on a plane play three long songs (totalling just under 20 minutes) on this ep, a mix of classic emo (julia), indie / emo (mineral) and post rock. you get build ups, twinkles, singing, sobbing, lengthy instrumental parts, and explosions. i am stoked to have been in on this one. the packaging is exceptional too, understated with stamped covers.

Wishes On A Plane sind 4 Münchner/innen die auch gerne instrumental zu Werke gehen. Allerdings verzichten sie oft auf brutal verzerrte Gitarrenwände und setzen dafür dann auf genretypisch etwas ungewohnten Gesang. Statt kehligem Geschrei erwarten einen Melodien, die stark an Mineral, Christie Front Drive und frühe Get Up Kids erinnern

Wishes on a Plane is een Duits D.I.Y. Indie-collectief dat het midden houdt tussen melodieuze Post-rock stukken, Old-skool emo (denk aan What Price, Wonderland?) en een geweldige stem die alles polijst tot een stuk prachtige en krachtige muziek. Dit is tevens de eerste keer dat ze in de Benelux optreden en zelfs de eerste keer dat ze buiten Duitstalig gebied spelen. Nochtans werden hun cd’s al gerealed in de UK en de US of A. Een niet te missen groep!

time 1 DATH+ NO3- cassette compilation

Well, we don't get that many tapes in for review. But when we do then most of the times it's not your average dubbed tape and photocopied cover. Just like this compilation released by Time as a Color. It comes in a screenprinted cover, and that is then wrapped in a printed envelope kinda thing with a handnumbered label. Inside you find - besides the mandatory tape, a shitload of flyers/inserts and the cover of the booklet has even been personalized. While people might say that this is sooo 90's (even the label site is 90's), i still think it's awesome.
Musically all the bands range between screamy hc and twinkly emo. A lot of bands featured on this comp. were unknown to me, some for a reason, others were decent to very good. Personal highlights are I not Dance, Grave Shovel Let's Go & Daitro. Cool stuff from a new label!

Es ist schön, dass manche Träume anscheinend nicht enden. Zum Beispiel, dass Musik auch eine liebevolle Verpackung verdient. Dass es nicht immer nur um Profit und Erfolg gehen muss. Dass man Sachen auch selber machen kann. D.I.Y. eben. Ein schönes Beispiel dafür kommt jetzt in Form einer handgemachten Tape-Compilation aus München, die in rund einer Stunde mit Bands wie LILAC, SAMARA, MAJMOON, MR. WILLIS OF OHIO, DAITRO oder WISHES ON A PLANE eine sehr anhörbare musikalische Reise durch Indie, Hardcore, Postrock, Emo und wunderbar ruhige Klänge unternimmt. Sehr schön: Das weiße Tape steckt in einer mit Linoldruck versehenen, selbst geklebten Hülle, die aus einem Pizzakarton ausgeschnitten wurde. Dazu ein kleines Heft mit nett gestalteten Bandseiten, einzelne Blätter mit Songtexten - und das alles zusammen noch einmal in bedrucktes Packpapier eingewickelt. Der Nummerierung auf der Hülle zufolge gibt es 300 Stück dieses Samplers: was für eine Arbeit. Time As A Color nennt sich das kleine Label aus München, ein Name, den man sich wohl merken sollte.
